Who we are

Peaceful means for advancing sustainability.

The Somali Institute for Environmental Peace (SIEP) is a non-governmental, non-profit institution founded in 2017 and headquartered in Mogadishu. SIEP is legally registered with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education of the Federal Government of Somalia as the first pioneer institute for environmental advocacy.

Our purpose is to prevent and respond to environmental problems by conducting research, providing environmental education and consultancy services, raising environmental awareness and promoting peace in Somalia, in order to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development.

We work with indigenous and local communities that have developed, or are developing, their own knowledge for monitoring biodiversity, ecosystems, water, oceans, land and other resources, as well as human well-being, based on traditional knowledge (Xeer) and a holistic view of people and the environment.

How we are governed

SIEP is overseen by a Board of Advisors. The Board advises on SIEP’s overall strategy, policy and direction, reviews past activities and lessons learned, reviews the financial statements, annual accounts and budget, supports and oversees management, and approves SIEP’s annual reports and yearly action plan. It meets twice a year.

Day-to-day work is led by the Executive Director, supported by managers for programs and for administration and finance, and by coordinators for research and development, consultancy and legal affairs, education and training, and resource mobilization and partnerships.
